“12 Pets of Christmas” Program Allows Adoption of Hard to Place Pets at a Discount

Now through December 23, 2012, members of the community can receive discounts for adopting pets that are traditionally hard to place. Long Beach Animal Care Services is participating in the Found Animal Foundation’s “12 Pets of Christmas” discount pet adoption program, which seeks to increase adoptions and reduce euthanasia among pets that are hard to place and often overlooked in shelters.
“Sometimes visitors to our animal shelter arrive with a preconceived image of their ideal pet. However, if given a chance, these hard-to-place animals can become the perfect pet,” Mayor Bob Foster said. “My cat Noah was an adult cat when we adopted him. He’s just a terrific cat and we love having him as part of our family.”
The “12 Pets of Christmas” promotion focuses on the following 12 categories of animals: adult cats (over 4 months), large dogs (over 40 pounds), black pets, Pit Bull type breeds, pets with minor medical needs, senior pets, overweight pets, bonded pairs, shy pets, adult Chihuahua/Chihuahua mixes (excluding puppies), “keep alone” pets, and exotics (birds, reptiles, etc.).
Discounts, on already low pet adoption fees, are $30 off for cats, $40 off for dogs, and 50 percent off exotics (up to $40). Discount coupons are available at www.foundanimals.org/12pets or by visiting Long Beach Animal Care Services. The discounts are funded by the Found Animal Foundation.
“Every pet deserves a home for the holidays,” says Aimee Gilbreath, Found Animals Executive Director. “While these 12 categories of pets may not be as flashy as puppies or purebreds, they are wonderful family companions, with lots of love to give,”
The Found Animals Foundation is a privately funded Los Angeles-based non-profit organization dedicated to animal welfare issues. Led by business and medical professionals, the Foundation works to reduce the use of euthanasia in shelters by supporting programs including: pet adoption, spay/neuter services, pet identification, and sterilization research.
