The US Sumo Open will take place on Saturday, September 20, 2014 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Walter Pyramid, California State University Long Beach, 1250 N. Bellflower Blvd., Long Beach, CA 90840. Doors open at noon. Parking is $5 per vehicle for the entire day.
Since 2001, the US Sumo Open has been the premiere tournament in North America, and one of the largest annual sumo competitions on the planet (outside of Japan), for 14 years! Nearly 400 sumo wrestlers from 25 countries have competed. In 2014, 40 elite sumo wrestlers are expected to participate, with multiple National and World Champions.
This year, the US Sumo Open will take place at the famous Walter Pyramid, a venue where all 6,000 seats have a great view of the action! The caliber of sumo this year will be quite high, in all weight classes, for both men and women. If you ever want to see live sumo, this is your chance to watch 100+ matches in one afternoon in a state-of-the-art facility, with the highest level of international competition.
In addition to four-time World Sumo Champion Byamba (who’s won the US Sumo Open every year since 2007), catch wrestlers in various weight and gender classes going head-to-head in this nationally televised championship. Plus, enjoy live music from Taiko drumming and savor Japanese food and drink, like Sapporo beer and Hakutsuru sake, available for purchase. And be sure to meet 600-pound “Yama,” one of the heaviest Japanese pro sumo wrestlers ever.
