According to the American Cancer Society, one in eight women will develop breast cancer and one in 75 women will develop ovarian cancer during their lifetime. On Sept. 26, the 16th Annual Team Spirit Breast & Ovarian Cancer 5K & 10K will bring together thousands of survivors, family members and friends affected by these cancers to raise funds for the MemorialCare Todd Cancer Institute (TCI) at Long Beach Memorial.

For the past 15 years, Team Spirit has helped fund important psychosocial programs, such as Women Guiding Women: Cancer Support & Education – a peer-mentoring program, support groups, social workers and the addition of a nurse navigator to TCI. These programs are available to anyone in the greater Long Beach community seeking cancer support regardless of their financial status.

“At the MemorialCare Todd Cancer Institute, we work with patients to help them feel stronger, reduce their pain, feel calmer before a treatment or surgery and recover faster,” says Mariusz Wirga, M.D., medical director, psychosocial oncology, MemorialCare Todd Cancer Institute, Long Beach Memorial. “Most of these programs, critical to a patient’s mental and emotional well-being, are not covered by health insurance. Thanks to the support of our community, and their dedication to the cause, we are able provide these cancer support programs to all cancer patients and their families, regardless of their ability to pay.”

Since its inception in 2000, Team Spirit has raised $2.5 million to benefit the breast and ovarian cancer programs for TCI. Last year’s event raised $285,000 and this year’s event has a goal of $300,000.

At the finish line, the walkers and runners will come together for the Finish Line Festival. The festival will include live music, vendors and massages. There also will be an opportunity to learn about the resources Long Beach Memorial has to offer and participants will be able to see what the money they raised supporting.

The walk/run will be on Saturday, Sept. 26, at Granada Beach. The cost to participate is $45 and participants can register online at teamspiritlb.com. On-site registration on the day of the event will be $70 per person. The walk/run waves begin at 8 a.m. and the event will finish between 11:00 a.m. and noon.
