Army Corps of Engineers to study reconfiguration for Long Beach Breakwater

For several years now, Long Beach residents and government officials have struggled with the issues relating to the breakwater. Congresswoman Laura Richardson announced Friday that she has secured $100,000 in federal funding to authorize the Army Corps of Engineers to evaluate the Federal interest in a reconfiguration of the Long Beach Breakwater off the coast of Long Beach to improve water quality, promote navigation, preserve coastal zones, and protect property.

Argh! Pirate Invasion takes over Belmont Pier today

The Long Beach Pier Daze Pirate Invasion, Faire and Festival will take place at the Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier Saturday, June 27 and Sunday, June 28. The free event is open each day from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Highlights include a living history Pirate encampment on the beach, live pirate show with real pirate ships “attacking” the pier, arts and crafts booth and a Kids Zone that includes a treasure hunt and pirate costume contest.

Assembly Safety Committee OKs plan to protect seniors

The Assembly Public Safety Committee today approved a plan by Sen. Jenny Oropeza to enhance penalties against those who repeatedly abuse the elderly. Senate Bill 18, approved on a bipartisan vote, would increase fines on those who abuse dependent adults and senior citizens 65 and older.

Interest-free loans help small business owners get out of debt

Many area small businesses may be eligible for interest-free loans under a new program created by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The “America’s Recovery Capital” (ARC) program, which went into effect on June 15, 2009, allows small firms to take out loans of $35,000 to pay down existing business debts.
