6th District Youth Talent Show: Auditions August 13

Sixth District Councilman Dee Andrews, the Long Beach Boys and Girls Club, the Long Beach Weed & Seed Program, and the youth of the 6th District is hosting a 6th District Youth Talent Show. The try-outs for the youth talent show are scheduled for Thursday, August 13, from 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm and the finals will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2009 from 1:00 p.m.

Three local beach reopen after sewage spill

City Health Officer, Dr. Helene Calvet, announced Thursday that the closures at Mother’s Beach, Marine Stadium and Colorado Lagoon, which had been closed due to a sewage spill Sunday night, has been lifted. Laboratory tests for Mother’s Beach and Colorado Lagoon received today were within State standards for the second consecutive day.  

Youth Ambassadors Program hosts Arts Celebration at Expo Building

Bring on the Funk! Downtown music festival showcases legends of funk

On Saturday, Aug. 29, from noon until midnight, internationally recognized legends and local bands alike will lay down the funk along Pine Avenue for Downtown Long Beach’s first funk fest. Made possible by the Downtown Long Beach Associates and the Long Beach Redevelopment Agency as part of the downtown Summer and Music (SAM) concert series, the funk festival is being coordinated by Bobby Easton—a Long Beach resident and 20-year veteran of the national funk scene.

Sewage spill closes Mother’s Beach, Marine Stadium and Colorado Lagoon recreational swimming areas

Update: LB Health Department reopened the beaches July 30. Acting City Health Officer Fred Herman, M.D., has issued a beach closure order for Mother’s Beach, Marine Stadium and Colorado Lagoon in Long Beach. The order was issued due to a sewage overflow that entered the storm system approximately ¼ mile away from the Los Cerritos Channel. 

Casino Night raises funds for LB Police Historical Society

On Friday, August 7, 2009, the Long Beach Police Historical Society (LBPHS) will host its third annual LBPHS Casino Night Fundraising Event at Skylinks Long Beach at 4800 East Wardlow Road from 7:00 p.m. to midnight.
