The 21st Annual St. Mary Foundation Charity Golf Tournament held on Monday, June 3, 2013, at the Virginia Country Club, raised more than $250,000 for renovation of the rapid triage area of the Emergency Department. Highlights of the evening’s dinner and auction event included a testimonial from a former Emergency Department patient who expressed his gratitude for the care and expertise of his St. Mary physicians.

Special recognition was given to the Evelyn M. Bauer Foundation, which matched every donation of $2,500 or more (up to $5,000) dollar-for-dollar, accounting for an additional $90,000. Tournament Co-Chairs were Steve Shea, MD and Paul Carter, Esq. John and Terri Groth coordinated a group of volunteers on the course, many whom have been volunteering since the first tournament. “Our donors–including sponsors, raffle and auction participants and individual golfers-– are always held in high esteem; without them, there is no true measure of success,” said Drew Gagner, St. Mary Medical Center Foundation president.

The tournament has raised close to $3 million since 1993 to help fund various programs and services at St. Mary Medical Center including the Emergency Department, Pediatrics, Short Stay Surgery, Cancer Outreach and Education, Clinical Care Extender, and Maternal Child Health Programs.

A full field of 144 golfers teed off at 11:00 a.m. Following the “best ball” round of golf, golfers and their guests enjoyed an outdoor cocktail reception and bid on dozens of exciting silent auction items before dining on the  gourmet surf-n-turf dinner for 220. Dr. Barry Heller, MD served as master of ceremonies for the evening’s event.

A very special part of the evening included a brief, yet heartfelt, talk delivered by St. Mary Medical Center patient Kevin Kozak, who expressed his gratitude for St. Mary Medical Center’s Emergency Department, led by Steve Shea, MD; its Trauma Surgery team, led by surgeon James Murray, MD; and surgeons Dr. Pearlman Hicks Jr. and Dr. Daniel Zinar. A federal agent of U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE), Kevin was the victim of multiple gunshot wounds received last year while in the line-of-duty. Post-operatively, Kevin also had high praise for Dr. Hubert Gulak in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the Rehab team, and St. Mary Chief of Staff Jyoti Datta, MD, who prepared special Indian food for Kevin and his family.

The big announcements regarding the day’s most notable achievements on the course were made by Dr. Shea. The winning team for the day, which received the coveted Leslie Esposito Trophy, was Dr. William Stringer, Douglas Diemer, Katherine Stringer and Robert Patton.

Auctioneer, President/and CEO of the Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, Randy Gordon, auctioned trips to Maui, Steamboat Springs, the Indianapolis 500, and more. Dr. Shea surprised Kevin Kozak by outbidding him on the 2014 Indianapolis 500 package, then gifted the trip to Kevin as a surprise. “This is just one example of the compassion and generosity of our medical staff,” said Gagner.
