Sophomore Jaklin Alawi is ranked #100 in singles to start the year.

2010 Big West Freshman of the Year Jaklin Alawi and senior Deborah Armstrong lead the 2010-11 Long Beach State women’s tennis team into action this week, as the 49ers start the fall season at the Cal NIKE Invitational.

Long Beach State will have seven players in action this weekend as the 49ers start off the season in Berkeley. Sophomore Jaklin Alawi begins the season as the highest-regarded 49er, ranked #100 in the Preseason Singles Rankings by the ITA. Alawi, who earned First-Team All-Big West honors in both singles and doubles in addition to her Freshman of the Year nod, went 21-13 in singles in 2010, including 16-7 in singles while primarily playing at No. 1.

In addition to Alawi, a veteran 49er squad returns every member from the 2009-10 squad that went undefeated during the regular season in Big West play. Senior Deborah Armstrong enters the season with an opportunity to take over a number of Long Beach State career records, most notably the overall wins record and the doubles wins records. Armstrong starts the year fourth all-time in overall wins with 142, and needs just 11 wins to become the all-time leader in doubles wins at Long Beach State.

Also returning for the 49ers are juniors Anais Dallara and Rachel Manasse. Both Dallara and Manasse have won 20 or more singles matches in both campaigns for the 49ers, and anchor the considerable depth for the LBSU lineup.

Junior Julie Luzar and sophomores Anna Jeczmionka and Sarah Cantlayround out the 49ers’ that saw action during the year last year, and all three will be competing this weekend in Berkeley.

The 49ers also welcome to the court sophomore Klaudia Malenovska, who after a lost season is now eligible to play in fall tournaments. The highest ranked recruit out of last year’s four freshman, the Slovakia native hits the court for the first time this weekend.

While Manasse will be held out in the final stages of recovery from an offseason, the other seven players will be competing in singles play. Malenovska and Alawi will form a new doubles tandem, while the 49ers turn to their pairings that played down the stretch in Big West play in Armstrong/Dallara and Cantlay/Luzar.
