The Hughes Middle School Environmental Science class will hold a free e-waste collection and document shredding event at Hughes Middle School, 3846 California Avenue, Long Beach, CA 90807 from 9am to 12:00 for document shredding and to 1pm for e-waste collection. Long Beach residents and businesses can safely and securely dispose of two types of “special waste” in one simple trip.

E-waste and private documents share two common features — neither should ever be put into the trash, and both contain valuable raw materials that can be recovered and recycled — up to 60 elements from the periodic table can be found in complex electronics, and recycling 1 ton of paper saves 17 trees and thousands of gallons of water and petroleum. Recovering these materials responsibly saves valuable resources and protects personal and public safety.

The Hughes Environmental Science class – known as the Eco-Squad – is a new elective being offered at Hughes for the first time this year. The class is structured so that students learn about environmental issues and then use that knowledge to offer eco-service to their school and the community. This free e-waste collection and document shred event is being sponsored by Cal-Heights resident Andrea Testa, neighborhood realtor with Keller Williams, who is underwriting all costs of the shred services so that the event can be offered free to the community.

Proceeds from the collection of e-waste will go to the school’s eco-project – led by 8th grader, Samy Santana – to convert turf areas to native plants that support pollinators like butterflies, beetles, and hummingbirds. Pollinator numbers are in serious decline in the US due to widespread pesticide use, disease, and habitat loss. Every yard, business front, and school yard can be part of the solution! Donations with drop-off gratefully accepted.

Shredding services provided by On-and-Off Site Shredding Services, a fully bonded and insured on-site shredding service. Shred materials limited to five bankers boxes. Individuals with materials for shredding are invited to watch their material as it is shred during the event. E-waste collection provided by All Green Recycling, certified in compliance with the e-Stewards Standard, the strongest standard governing the globally responsible management of electronic waste. All Green is also offering FREE business pick-up for sites with over 20 computers or monitors. Businesses can schedule a site pick-up online by visiting the event webpage. Materials collected from online registration will be credited to this event.
