Carjacking Suspect Arrested, Charged For December Murder

Murder charges have been filed against a man from Los Angeles after his arrest on an unrelated carjacking and vehicle pursuit incident.
On January 16, 2016, Long Beach Police initiated a pursuit of a vehicle wanted for an armed carjacking that occurred in Los Angeles. The pursuit ended in the 1400 block of Orange Avenue after the suspect vehicle was involved in a collision. One of the suspects, identified as Keonte Jones, fled from the vehicle on foot. Officers chased Jones and took him into custody without further incident. The second suspect who remained in the vehicle was also taken into custody.
Long Beach Police Homicide detectives, through their investigation of the December 10, 2015, shooting of 34-year-old Roosevelt Newton of Long Beach (Newton died the following day), identified 23-year-old Keonte Jones of Los Angeles as the person responsible for the shooting death of victim Newton. Jones was already in-custody for his involvement in the January 16th carjacking/vehicle pursuit.
On January 22, 2016, detectives presented the murder case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Jones was additionally charged with Newton’s murder and is now being held on $4,000,000 bail at the LA County Men’s Central Jail. Jones was arraigned on January 27th and is expected back for his next court appearance on February 16th.
