After a lengthy investigation, Long Beach Police arrested Christopher Martinez for his involvement in multiple gang-related shootings that occurred between December 2012 and November 2015, one of which resulted in the death of a male adult.
On December 11, 2012, about 9:04 p.m., officers were dispatched to a shooting in the 6500 block of Paramount Boulevard. Long Beach Fire Department personnel responded and transported a male adult, who sustained multiple gunshot injuries, to a local hospital. The victim survived.
On January 16, 2013, at approximately 8:30 p.m., officers responded to a shooting call in the 1700 block of Cherry Avenue. The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim, identified as 25-year-old Levert Johnson, was standing at a bus stop with a group when a male subject confronted him. Words were exchanged between the two. The suspect pulled out a handgun, shot Mr. Johnson multiple times, then fled on foot. The victim was transported to a local hospital and succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving.
On November 25, 2015, at approximately 1:50 p.m., officers were dispatched to shots heard in the area of East Pacific Coast Highway and Martin Luther King Boulevard. Officers located a vehicle that sustained damage, but did not find anyone who sustained injuries. Detectives from the Gang Investigation Section, assisted by the West Division Directed Enforcement Team and Narcotics Investigation detectives, responded to begin their investigation.
Through the course of their investigation, detectives determined Christopher Martinez was involved in the three incidents.
On February 25, 2016, detectives arrested 22-year-old Christopher Gabriel Martinez, a resident of Long Beach. Martinez was arraigned on March 1, 2016. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office charged one count of murder, one count of attempted murder, two counts of assault with a firearm, one count of discharging a firearm with gross negligence, and three gun enhancements against Martinez. He is being held in Los Angeles County Jail with bail set at $5,000,000.
On March 3, 2016, around 9:11 a.m., West Division Directed Enforcement officers attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation in the area of 5th Street and Chestnut Avenue. The vehicle failed to yield and a short, low speed pursuit ensued. The vehicle stopped in the 300 block of Daisy Avenue and the suspect was taken into custody without incident. Officers consulted with detectives regarding their ongoing investigation and Kevon Javier Davis, 22 years old and a resident of Long Beach, was arrested for his involvement, with Martinez, in the November 25, 2015 shooting. He was booked for assault with a firearm, a gang enhancement, and evading a police officer. He is being held at Long Beach City Jail without bail due to a violation of probation conditions. Davis will be arraigned on March 7, 2016.
