The Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services (Health Department) has achieved national accreditation through the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB). Only 118 health departments in the United States, including only three of the 61 health departments in California, have achieved this distinction.

“Our Health Department is on the front line of improving and protecting the health and well-being of our residents,” said Mayor Robert Garcia. “This accreditation demonstrates our City’s capacity to provide the highest quality of services to our community, and reflects the dedication of staff to be responsive to its needs.”

The national accreditation program is designed to protect and improve the health of the public by advancing the quality and performance of all public health departments in the country. To achieve accreditation, a health department must undergo a rigorous, multi-faceted, peer-reviewed assessment process to ensure it meets or exceeds public health quality standards and measures.

“This incredible accomplishment is official recognition that our Health Department is committed to meeting our community’s needs as effectively as possible,” said Kelly Colopy, Director of Health and Human Services.

The Long Beach Health Department launched its accreditation efforts more than three years ago, a process that included the development of a strategic plan, a community health improvement plan, and a community health needs assessment. Employees, the Board of Health and Human Services, and community members worked together to demonstrate and document the 97 requirements of accreditation, and to showcase the strength of our community engagement and collaborative partnerships.

Many public service and health-related entities such as hospitals and universities have accreditation programs; however, until PHAB became the nation’s first independent accrediting body for public health agencies in 2011, there was no national accreditation program for public health departments. Accreditation by PHAB signifies that a health department is meeting national standards for ensuring that essential public health services are provided in the community.

The Health Department will be unveiling its Accreditation Award, as well as celebrating its 110th birthday, on April 7, 2016 during its annual Public Health Week conference.
