The public is invited to attend a Grand Opening Celebration for the Cesar E. Chavez Park Fitness Zone and Loop, located at 401 Golden Avenue on Saturday, April 2, at 8:30 am.

“We are committed to supporting health and mobility for residents, and this is now the seventh Fitness Zone to open in Long Beach in the last five years,” said Mayor Robert Garcia. “Residents can also exercise on free outdoor exercise equipment at Admiral Kidd, Coolidge, Orizaba, 14th Street, Bixby and Houghton Parks.”

The new Fitness Zone is approximately 960 square feet and located near the tot lot, restrooms and picnic benches in the section of the park north of 5th Street. It features six separate pieces of self-use exercise equipment, including three pieces that are ADA accessible; all are designed so users can engage in healthy physical activity free of charge. The Fitness Loop includes a circuit utilizing the equipment as well as a walking route through the park.

“The Chavez Park Fitness Loop will further activate the park by offering a convenient, free option for fitness and healthy living,” said Councilwoman Lena Gonzalez. “I’m thrilled to be able to support residents’ efforts to lead healthy, active lifestyles.”

Funding for the improvements included $55,000 from one-time infrastructure funds from the Office of Councilwoman Gonzalez, and $7,020 from a Greenfields Playground Equipment Grant. The installation began in February 2016 and was recently completed.
