Long Beach Airport (LGB) is getting a new airline as well as new routes that will begin service in June 2016. Mayor Robert Garcia, representatives from the City of Long Beach and LGB joined Southwest Airlines today aboard the iconic Queen Mary for the special announcement. The airline revealed that when it begins service from Long Beach Airport, it will offer four flights a day to Oakland.
“We are thrilled to welcome Southwest Airlines, the world’s largest low-cost carrier, to Long Beach Airport,” said Mayor Robert Garcia. “Our airport is well known for providing excellent customer service, and with Southwest’s reputation for customer satisfaction and affordable air fares, it is a fitting addition to Long Beach.”
In February, the airport announced that four of nine flight slots newly made available, as required by the Noise Ordinance and confirmed by findings in the most recent annual Noise Budget Analysis, had been awarded to Southwest Airlines. The airline was given 90 days from the point of notification to make flights available for sale, and six months to begin operations from the airport.
“Southwest Airlines announcement that they will be starting service to Oakland from LGB is a great event for our customers,” said Juan Lopez-Rios, Interim Airport Director. “Now, the traveling public will have yet another reason for flying through Long Beach Airport.”
Southwest will begin offering flights to Oakland on June 5, 2016. The location allows travelers to connect to 19 of the airline’s other destinations. To inaugurate the new service, Southwest has announced a fare sale with one-way flights starting at $49.
