Long Beach Fire Fighters, Local 372 will join the Long Beach Lambda Democratic Club at their annual Pride kickoff fundraiser on Thursday, May 19 at 6:00 pm at Made Long Beach located at 240 Pine Avenue.
The occasion will mark the long-awaited return of community icon, Zeep the Sheep. Guests will have the opportunity to bid on painting Zeep for his debut in the Long Beach Pride Parade. The winner can also walk in the parade with Zeep and the Firefighters. “Zeep is an institution in the neighborhood serviced by Fire Station 2 and is a symbol of pride and endearment for our firefighters,” said Local 372 Vice President Jake Atwood. “We’re happy to partner with an organization like Lambda which has such a rich history of fighting for civil rights in Long Beach.”
This annual event has also been renamed in honor of long time Lambda member and past president, Dave Newell who passed away in 2015. “We couldn’t think of a better way to remember such a dedicated champion for LGBT rights than naming this fundraiser after Dave,” said Lambda Events Chair, Herlinda Chico. “The money we raise will go to pay for the Dave Newelltable at the Human Rights Banquet in October. Dave always made sure he purchased a table for those who could not afford a ticket and we’re honored to continue his legacy.”
The C.A.R.E. program at St. Mary’s Hospital will be given the President’s Award at the event for its support and dedication to the LGBT community. All money raised will benefit both Lambda and Local 372 and their community outreach efforts. Other auction items include a Disney gift basket, tickets to Pride parties, lunch at a Long Beach Fire Station, Duffy Boat Cruise for 8 and Paddle board / Kayak rental for 4. MADE Long Beach is donating 10% of purchases made through May 22 to the fundraiser when customers mention Lambda or Local 372.
Event organizers would like to thank sponsors Senator Ricardo Lara, Mayor Robert Garcia, Vice Mayor Suja Lowenthal, Councilwoman Lena Gonzalez, Councilman Roberto Uranga and Tonia Reyes Uranga, LBCC Trustees Doug Otto and Vivian Malauulu, 2nd District Council Candidates Eric Gray and Jeannine Pierce, Crummitt and Associates and Team Pennywise Real Estate.
