A BOLD MOVE; The Art of Philip Smith Opens At The LB Playhouse
2011-01-14 · By Editor
The Long Beach Playhouse Gallery is proud to present A BOLD MOVE, the work of artist Philip Smith. Artist reception and exhibition opening is Thursday, January 20TH at 7-9 pm. Exhibition runs through March 5, 2011.
Smith’s current work involves the exploration of new techniques, textures and shapes. He has also taken a step toward interactivity in “A Bold Move” and a step away from flat art in the “Pond” series. In “A Bold Move” the format encourages and allows for new patterns by rearranging the individual frames. The “Pond” series represents pools of water with their irregular borders and floating tiles. He has also experimented with new techniques, specifically, layering, embossing, weaving and fusing. The heart of Smith’s Art is the vitreous enamel process with its inherent beauty, reflectivity and transparency. Each copper tile is fired with layers of powdered glass, by hand multiple times in a kiln at high temperatures and then combined with other tiles to create the finished art work.
Smith’s work is included in private collections and the collections of Kaiser Permanente Hospital, White and Case, Ze Tools, White Memorial Hospital and St. Joseph’s Hospital. He is currently represented by Gallerie Barjur and Wild Holly Gallery.
