‘A Grand Sousa Gala’ to Benefit the Long Beach Municipal Band
2012-04-18 · By Editor
Now in its 103rd year, the Long Beach Municipal Band is one of the most beloved institutions in the City of Long Beach. To celebrate this milestone and raise funds to support the 2012 Municipal Band summer concert season, the Long Beach Municipal Band Foundation, Partners of Parks and the Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine are presenting a “Grand Sousa Gala” on Friday, April 27, 2012 at 6 pm, at the Grand Ballroom of the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center, located at 200 South Pine Ave.
“The Grand Sousa Gala will not only be a great evening for all, but it will also help a Long Beach institution that has been entertaining our residents for generations,” Mayor Bob Foster said.
The evening features a concert by the Municipal Band with conductor Larry Curtis and soprano Renee Sousa, great-grandniece of John Phillip Sousa. Audiences will also enjoy dancing to the Studio Jazz Band with vocalists Barbara Morrison and Nicole Kubis. There will be an international buffet, casino style gaming, and a silent auction.
“We play for so many people who eagerly anticipate and look forward to the concerts each summer,” says conductor Larry Curtis. “With community support of this time-honored tradition I know we can make it through this period of austerity and preserve this great, living, Long Beach treasure. I’m confident that our concert fans will continue to be involved and I encourage everyone to become a donating member of the Municipal Band Foundation. Through these efforts we will be able to present great concerts in the future, as the band has so eloquently done for more than a century.”
