ABBAMANIA Comes to The Richard and Karen Carpenter Performing Arts Center
2015-04-17 · By Editor
If you missed ABBA’s last California performance 35 years ago, you’ll get one more chance to relive the magic May 3 at the Richard and Karen Carpenter Performing Arts Center at Cal State Long Beach, 6200 East Atherton Street. The ABBAMANIA tribute band takes the stage at 2 p.m.
Sept. 22, 1979 at the San Diego Sports Arena was the last chance Californians had to see the international singing sensation ABBA. At that time the Swedish foursome were in the middle of an eight-year reign of chart-topping success from 1975 to their breakup in 1983. Since then the only way to see their songs performed live has been through tribute performances.
ABBAMANIA will pay tribute to ABBA with 21 disco hits, including “Mamma Mia,” “Dancing Queen,” “Take a Chance on Me” and “Fernando.” (See below for full set list).
Hailing from Ontario, Canada, ABBAMANIA is a quartet backed by a live band and backup vocalists, making up 12 performers altogether. The group has performed worldwide, with stops in Malaysia, South America, The Dominican Republic, Jakarta and the Grand Cayman Islands, as well as the United States.
The group last played the Carpenter Center on Oct. 20, 2007.
Their authentic costumes, vocal collaboration and stage performance accurately depict the late-70s ABBA that disco fans fell in love with.
Here’s what members of the press have been saying:
“Vocally and musically superb” — The Toronto Sun
“Truly a great show” — The Globe and Mail
“The closest thing to ABBA that you will ever see.”— Toronto’s “Mamma Mia” cast
This is the last performance of the season for the theater’s Sunday Afternoon Concert Series.
ABBAMANIA is Sunday May 3, 2015 at 2 p.m. at the Richard and Karen Carpenter Performing Arts Center 6200 Atherton St., Long Beach , CA 90815.
