Affordable Activities Make it Easy to Stay and Play in Long Beach

This summer there are hundreds of free or low cost activities offered by Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Maine, the Long Beach Convention and Visitor’s Bureau and local museums and businesses, that are captured on www.100daysofsummer.org. The site details summer activities happening every day from Memorial Day to Labor Day in Long Beach. Get together with your family and friends and enjoy one of these great upcoming events:
The Long Beach Municipal Band season concludes this week with the music of the swing era and guest vocalist Meloney Collins. Concerts are scheduled for July 31 at Los Cerritos Park; August 1 at Marine Stadium, and August 2; and El Dorado Park West. All shows are free and begin at 6:30 p.m. The Municipal Band is sponsored by Long Beach Parks, Recreation & Marine, Partners of Parks, Long Beach Gas & Oil, the Long Beach Environmental Services Bureau and the Port of Long Beach.
Enjoy a picnic by the lake at El Dorado Nature Center’s summer concert series. Gates open at 6:30 p.m.; concerts held from 7-8 p.m. $3 per person; under age 12. Come out and enjoy the Celtic Rock sounds of Sligo Rags on August 8.
Free Movies in the Park
“Movies in the Park” sponsored by Signal Hill Petroleum in cooperation with Partners of Parks offers free family friendly films. Bring a lawn chair, blanket, picnic dinner, and family and friends. Upcoming: “Escape from Plant Earth” on July 29 at Seaside Park, 14th Street and Chestnut Avenue; July 31 at MacArthur Park, 1321 Anaheim Street, and August 2 at Heartwell Park. 5801 E. Free Kids Fishing Rodeo: Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier August 2 – 8 a.m. – Noon. Boys and girls ages 16 and under. Youth under age 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Please provide own fishing pole, tackle and bait. Free. Prizes awarded. Food and beverage for sale.
Movies at Granada Beach

81st Annual Great Sand Sculpture Contest – Granada Beach – August 10 & 11 – 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Hosted by Rotaract Long Beach and Alfredo’s Beach Club. This year’s theme, “Fantastic Fantasy: Adventures in Literacy,” will challenge teams to sculpt their story of our community and promote literacy in Long Beach. Sign up in advance as an event team or event sponsor. Arts and crafts, vendors, live music, food and a fenced-off kid zone supervised by event staff. All proceeds donated to promoting childhood and adult in our community through the Long Beach Public Library Foundation.
