Annual Long Beach Food Drive benefits local families, pets

For the second year in a row, Mayor Bob Foster and Food Finders are partnering to help shrinking food bank supplies in the Long Beach area. This year’s food drive will also include a request for pet food donations to help out Long Beach pet owners and their animal friends. Food donation barrels will be placed in 24 locations throughout the city. Canned or packaged food donations will be accepted starting today until Jan. 31, 2010.
“Long Beach residents responded to last year’s food drive with overwhelming and generous results, helping us provide nearly 34,000 meals,” said Foster. “We’re asking community members again this year to help our neighbors who are less fortunate. Several people are still without a job and continue to struggle with the cost of living.”
All of the food donated during the drive will benefit local residents. Long Beach-based Food Finders will pick up and distribute the donated food to more than 100 organizations in Long Beach. There is a special request for Thanksgiving items during the month of November.
“We have seen an even greater need this year with at least a 60% increase in demand from some of our partner food banks,” said Arlene Mercer, Food Finders executive director. “Additionally, all of our partner organizations have told us that people are also requesting pet food.”
The Friends of Long Beach Animals will assist this year by collecting and distributing pet food donations to owners who are finding it a challenge to provide for themselves and their pets.
“Friends of Long Beach Animals is proud to partner with Mayor Foster in contributing to the food drive by collecting pet food,” said Shirley Vaughan, president of the pet advocacy organization. “During these tough economic times, it is more important than ever that we all step up to provide for those less fortunate than ourselves – and their companion animals, who provide comfort and emotional solace.”
