Mayor Bob Foster, Councilmember Steven Neal, the Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine, and Partners of Parks invite the public to attend an opening event for the DeForest Park Futsal Courts on Saturday, August 17, at 9 am. DeForest Park is located at 6255 DeForest Ave.
“Futsal is a fast-paced variant of soccer that is rapidly becoming more popular in Long Beach and around the world,” Mayor Bob Foster said. “I’m pleased that we are able to provide a venue for the community to enjoy this exciting sport.”
Two tennis courts at DeForest Park have been converted to two new futsal courts with a $61,500 grant from the U.S. Soccer Foundation and additional support from the non-profit Partners of Parks organization.
“These wonderful new futsal courts will help keep our community active and improve the quality of life for our residents,” said Councilmember Neal, who represents the 9th District. ”
Futsal is played indoors and outdoors on a hard surface, using a smaller ball with less bounce than a regular soccer ball. The surface, ball and rules create an emphasis on improvisation, creativity and technique, as well as ball control and passing in small spaces. Skills developed on a futsal court translate very well to a full-size soccer field.
DeForest Park also serves the community with a basketball court, community center, nature trail, playground, racquetball court, softball field, tennis courts, sand volleyball court, restrooms, youth recreation and adult classes.
After the opening ceremony, the second annual Long Beach Futsal District Cup Tournament for boys ages 8-17 and girls ages 12-17 will begin at 10 am. For more information, please call 562.570.3150.
