On Saturday, September 28, 2013, at about 6:00 p.m. Long Beach Police were dispatched to the 300 block of E. Poppy Street regarding a person with a gun call. Initial calls indicated there was a fight at nearby DeForest Park. Additional callers described two female adults struggling with a male adult in front of a residence on Poppy Street.
When the first officer arrived, he noticed the three subjects fighting on the porch and noticed the suspect looked in his direction and made eye contact with him. Within seconds, the officer heard a gunshot coming from the direction of the subjects and believed the suspect was shooting at him. Additional officers arrived to assist and directed the two women away from the suspect who was sitting near a small handgun. Initially, the subjects were uncooperative but with additional directional commands, the parties complied. Officers directed the suspect into a prone position and took him into custody without incident.
Officers determined the suspect was involved in an argument with his girlfriend and another male who were attending a party at the park. Believing the suspect would gain access to his firearm and discharge it, the females attempted to intervene and a struggle ensued. The suspect discharged a firearm, but no one was struck.
The suspect is identified as Joseph Hill, 31-years-old and resident of Long Beach. He was booked on attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, felon in possession of a firearm, violation of parole, and domestic violence. Hill is being held in the Long Beach City Jail on $540,000 bail.
