executive-sweet“Executive Sweet”, a World War Two B25 Mitchell medium bomber, will be on display at Wings, Wheels Rotors & Expo at Los Alamitos Army Airfield next Sunday.

The Wings, Wheels and Rotors Expo combines a display of military and civilian airplanes, helicopters and a large custom car show. The event includes more than 150 vendors and exhibits, live entertainment and a kids corner.

During the show, the historic plane will provide a bird’s eye view of Los Alamitos, Long Beach and the surrounding area with a limited number of flights available for sale.

The B25 was manufactured for the Army Air Corps by North American Aviation. Executive Sweet was built in Kansas City as a B-25J in 1944 and was used mostly for training Army bomber crews.

She has twin Wright Double Cyclone engines rated at 1700 hp each with a maximum speed of 275 mph and cruises at 230 mph.

This type of aircraft is the same as those used during the famous Doolittle Raid in April 1942 when 15 “Mitchells” flew off the aircraft carrier USS Hornet(CV-8) to bomb Japan. Executive Sweet also participated in the Doolittle Raid 50th Anniversary in 1992.

Executive Sweet now belongs to the American Aeronautical Foundation, a non profit aviation group run by volunteers out of Camarillo Airport. This B-25 participates in various airshows and events around the country.

During the flight riders may take their turn in history and try out all of the different crew positions on-board the aircraft — including tail gunner, waist gunner, top turret gunner and nose gunner/bombardier.

Executive Sweet, tail number 44-30801, will be on display between flights for airshow visitors to examine her 68-foot wing span and distinctive World War II art.
