Basketball & Books Day Camp coming to St. Anthony High School in August

basketball-campNBA basketball veteran Darrick Martin will host a free Basketball and Books Day Camp for boys and girls ages seven to 17, August 3 – 7 at St. Anthony High School in downtown Long Beach.

Day Camp is offered from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. daily, with play on Darrick Martin Court in the St. Anthony High School Gymnasium located at 6th and Alamitos. Martin was an NBA basketball player for 13 years, most recently with the Toronto Raptors. He is a graduate of St. Anthony High School’s Class of 1988.

The Darrick Martin Youth Basketball and Books Camp is designed to offer much more than basketball instruction provided by NBA players and volunteers committed to youth. According to Brian Walsh, St. Anthony’s Athletic Director, “The Camp will focus on development of skills which nourish the body, mind and spirit in a variety of areas. We’ll be offering everything from nutrition and hygiene, to goal setting, study skills and leadership development.” Day Camp participants will receive a free camp t-shirt and lunch each day.

Applications are available from St. Anthony High School, 620 Olive Avenue (corner of Olive and 6th Street), or campers may register online or download the application from St. Anthony’s web site ( ). Only 125 students will be accepted for this no-cost program, and applications must be received at St. Anthony’s by Friday, July 24th at 3 p.m. for consideration.
