The mangled remains of a bike were found underneath the Blue Line train.

At approximately 1:48 p.m. on Thursday afternoon, a bicycle rider was struck by a northbound Metro Train just south of the Wardlow Station at the intersection of Pacific Avenue and Wardlow Road.

When Long Beach firefighters arrived, they discovered a male in his 30s had been struck and dragged several hundred feet. Paramedics assessed the victim and pronounced him dead at the scene. A bike was found wedged in the north end of the train.

Blue Line trains continued to run, but were rearranged to share the southbound track between Wardlow and Willow stations. Riders experienced 15- to 20-minute delays due to limited single track capacity.

The scene was turned over to authorities from Metro and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department for investigation of the cause.
