Bicyclist Fatally injured While Riding in Traffic Circle

On Tuesday, February 1, 2011, at approximately 7:31 p.m., officers from the Long Beach Police Department responded to a traffic collision involving a vehicle and a bicyclist in the area of Lakewood Boulevard and Los Coyotes Diagonal that resulted in the death of an adult male.
Upon arrival, officers discovered that a red 2009 Toyota Scion had entered the Traffic Circle from southbound Lakewood Boulevard and struck the bicyclist who was traveling in the Traffic Circle. The driver of the vehicle stopped immediately and rendered aid to the victim, who had sustained major injuries to his upper body.
Long Beach Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The victim has been identified as, Fernando Santiago, a 48-yr-old Long Beach resident.
The driver of the Toyota Scion, a 64-yr-old resident of Long Beach, was not injured in the accident. He was interviewed and released at the scene and charges may be pending.
