In 1972, racing rivals Don “The Snake” Prudhomme and Tom “The Mongoose” McEwen, faced off in their Funny Cars on the outskirts of Long Beach on the track where both of these world-class racers got their starts. This final showdown at Lions Drag Strip is still known today as “The Last Drag Race” and lives on in the legends of racing.

Forty years later, “The Snake” and “The Mongoose” appear together again to headline the “Legends of Lions” at the 7th Annual Bixby Knolls Dragster Expo and Car Show, which takes place on Saturday, July 14th.

The Bixby Knolls Dragster Expo and Car Show is a signature event in this Long Beach neighborhood and an annual favorite among racing and car show enthusiasts. The event, which is free to the public, takes place from 3:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Atlantic Avenue between Roosevelt Road and San Antonio Drive.

This year’s show, which is free to the public, features the “Legends of Lions” with special appearances by the famous racing rivals Don “The Snake” Prudhomme and Tom “The Mongoose” McEwen, who will sign autographs and showcase their famous Funny Cars.

Located less than four miles from the site of the legendary Lions Drag Strip, which operated from 1955 until 1972, the Bixby Knolls Dragster Expo and Car Show combines a static car show featuring more than 200 classic and specialty cars in multiple award categories with a celebration of racing, paying special tribute to Long Beach’s place in racing history.

Seventeen vintage Top Fuel dragsters will be taking part in the event’s Cacklefest, the most dragsters to simultaneously fire up their 3000-horsepower engines at the Dragster Expo and Car Show. The final dragster fire-up is a highlight of the show as the nitro flames glow in the dusk of the summer evening.

This year’s event also features a world-class pinstriping exhibition in the Expo Arts Center, as well as Kenny Youngblood, drag racing’s most prolific artist, who will be making a special appearance at the Expo.

The kids’ zone will once again feature professional BMX bike demonstrations, as well as a mobile fun van, that will feature racing video games for kids to play.

In addition to the many outstanding restaurants and eateries on Atlantic Avenue, the event will also feature a number of popular gourmet food trucks, as well as the event’s beer garden. Live music will be featured throughout the venue.

The Bixby Knolls Dragster Expo and Car Show is produced by the Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association in cooperation with the office of Long Beach Councilwoman Rae Gabelich.
