Heather, the crafty owner of Brianne's Basics, holds up the baskets her family donated to Operation Easter Basket.

EverythingLongBeach recently spoke with Heather, Crafter/Volunteer of Brianne’s Basics, via email. They talked about inspirations, challenges and what’s it’s like having running business with the main goal of giving profits away.

How long have you been in business?

I started my “business” about 10 years ago. It’s evolved quite a bit since then.

Describe Brianne’s Basisc:

Brianne’s Basics is all about heart. I sell handmade crafts and unique gifts: bookmarks, home decor, purses, wallets, jewelry, and more. I’ve recently started selling craft supplies as well. I donate 100% of our profits to various local organizations.

Why did you start Brianne’s Basics?

I started my business many years ago as a way for people to get unique handmade gifts. Handmade items add character to every occasion. The name actually came from my mom (Brianne is my middle name). I’ve been doing crafts since I was 5 years old. It’s a natural progression for me.

What makes Brianne’s Basics stand out?

My business donates 100% of its profits to local charities and events. Most items are made to order. The customer chooses colors, quotes, etc.

What is the biggest success Brianne’s Basics has had?

Donating to various organizations. We’ve donated to Binky Patrol, Broken Loaf Food Pantry, CHOC Walk In The Park, LB Depot For Creative Reuse, Love In The Mirror, Operation Easter Basket, Red Cross, Soldier’s Angels, and so many more.

What is your favorite part of running your business?

My favorite part of my business is making each item from scratch. My second favorite part is participating in local charity events. On April 11, I’m participating in the Ronald McDonald House Walk For Kids. In the coming months I’m also participating in Relay For Life and CHOC Walk In The Park.

What are the biggest challenges you face?

The biggest challenge is getting my business out there. Many people don’t have extra money to spare, which is understandable.

What unique talents do you bring to Brianne’s Basics?

I bring 25+ years of crafting experience, plus 10+ years of marketing.

How is Brianne’s Basics involved with the community?

I donate items, toys, money, etc., to local charities. I also participate in a number of events.

Do you have any future plans for Brianne’s Basics?

To continue to donate as much as possible!

What is the best advice that you received and who did it come from?

The best advice I’ve ever received was from my Aunt Liz. She said, “Every day is the first day of the rest of your life.” It reminds me that every day is a new opportunity and a new chance to help someone out.

One last thought: Always remember, kindness counts. Pass it on.
