Learn to identify local butterflies at a class at El Dorado Nature Center.

Painted Lady, West Coast Lady or American Lady? Join naturalist Richard James to learn more about butterfly species local to Long Beach and be ready to identify them all in the annual Butterfly Count in July.

Butterfly Identification Class is scheduled for Saturday, June 29 from 1-3pm. The cost is $10 per person, ages 16 and up.

The Butterfly Identification Class is a great way to prepare for the annual North American Butterfly Association Count, which will take place in Long Beach on July 13.

Last year, 438 counts were held in 45 states plus the District of Columbia. The NABA Butterfly Counts is a compilation of all butterflies observed in a 15-mile diameter of various sites within North America during a one-day period. Comparisons of the yearly results monitor changes in butterfly populations and show the effects of weather and habitat change on North American butterflies.

The cost to participate in the Annual Butterfly Count is $5 per person. The event takes place on Saturday, July 13 from 9:45-noon and/or 12:30-3 at El Dorado Nature Center. All ages are welcome.
