dawn-morishige-buyartEverythingLongBeach.com recently spoke with Dawn Morishige, Owner of BuyArt Studios Custom Framing, via email. They talked about inspirations, challenges and what’s it’s like having a business in Rose Park.

How long has BuyArt Studios been in business?:

4 Years

Describe your business:

I’m Dawn Morishige and I’m a Mixed Media artist with a studio/gallery in Long Beach. My work is on the cutting edge of a new art form; that of Sculptural Photography and Film Etching.

I am a mixed media artist blending the techniques of darkroom manipulation with my own experimentation of sculpting resin and etching on Ortho-Litho Film. I use ortho litho film, fiber photos, wood, metal, resin, paper, fabric, enamel, dry pigment, and acrylic medium.

My pieces are either created in screen form, free hanging panels or layered etched film that create a 3 dimensional sculptural image. Etching on film creates an image that is both drawing and photography. It enables me to draw attention to a particular part of a scene and/or add color to a black and white image. Resin gives the pieces a liquid, holographic quality.

Hours are: 11:00 to 5:00pm – Wednesday through Saturday., Sunday through Tuesday by appointment only.

BUYART STUDIOS features my Fine Art Photographic Room Dividers, Film Etchings and Abstract Free Form Acrylic Works Custom Framing is discounted for artists and designers. Bring in a Quote, and I will beat it with similar materials and moulding. 15 years experience, only quality materials, and you don’t have to worry about becoming lost in Corporate Indifference!

Why did you start BuyArt Studios Custom Framing?

I am a mixed media artist with a Studio/Gallery/Custom Framing Shop in Long Beach. I have dreamt of being an Independent Artist since Graduating from Otis/Parsons in 1991. I was finally able to start building on that dream when I opened BuyArt Studios in 2004. Since then I have had many shows for my work and other local struggling artists

What makes BuyArt Studios Custom Framing stand out?

Having my studio open to the public, people are constantly coming in to thank me for being here and adding a positive presence to the neighborhood. As I see school age kids walk by and look in, I hope the art will give them another idea as they are thinking about the direction of their life. I know it’s opening their minds to new possibilities. Hopefully we as a society will start to provide more support for those alternative possibilities.

What is the biggest success BuyArt Studios Custom Framing has had?

My Film Etching process has been featured on Home and Garden Television.

What is your favorite part of running your business?

Bringing original Artwork to the community. Also providing beautiful framing.

What are the biggest challenges you face?

The challenges have been establishing a footing in a low income area and getting through these bad economic times while trying to build a business.

What unique talents do you bring to BuyArt Studios Custom Framing?

I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Art Photography. I have been custom framing for the past 15 years.

How is BuyArt Studios Custom Framing involved with the community?

I volunteer with the Friends of Signal Hill Cultural Arts and Soroptimist International of Long Beach which provides support for women and girls. I also provide several churches in the community with art supplies and workshops on framing. Through these organizations I am able to share my knowledge of art with
local groups and provide art education to those who would not otherwise have this experience.

I took the leap of faith to open my studio in a low income area. And neighbors frequently come in to thank me for being here and adding a positive presence. It is a joy to see my business benefit the community and see how it lifts the spirits of a neglected population.

Do you have any future plans for BuyArt Studios Custom Framing?

My short term goals are to provide a space for my work as well as other struggling artists. My studio is a beautiful place to display work, and I provide the space free of charge. I would like to reach a wider audience through my art exhibits in order to promote the arts in general.

What is the best advice that you received and who did it come from?

If you have a goal, do something everday toward that goal, and you’ll eventually get there. — My Mother.
