“Authors who develop their communication and leadership skills have more successful businesses and sell more books,” says Carma Spence, Area E2 Governor for Toastmasters International District One, and author of four books currently available on “That’s why I’m founding the Entrepreneurial Authors’ Club here in Long Beach. “

This won’t be the first Toastmasters Club for writers in the Los Angeles Area. ToastWriters has been meeting in Santa Monica for a couple of years. “Toastwriters is an excellent club,” said Spence, “however, that can be quite a trek if you live in the South Bay. I felt that writers and authors in the greater Long Beach area … and I know there are many because I’ve interviewed them for my Long Beach Writing Examiner column … need a club to call their own.”

A typical Toastmasters meeting includes three segments: prepared speeches, evaluations of those speeches and impromptu speaking. “We’ll have all those speaking and feedback opportunities, as well,” said Spence. “But we’re also going to include one segment that will really help our members improve their ability to sell their books: time to practice their introductory, 30-second ‘elevator speech’ and feedback on how well they did.

At each meeting, members will put their name in a bowl and two to three names will be drawn to present their pitch. “Doing it this way accomplishes two things,” said Spence. “It keeps members on their toes so they can be prepared whenever an opportunity to talk about their book comes up, and it provides an forum for constructive feedback on whether what they are saying is effective or not.”

Entrepreneurial Authors’ Club will official launch on Tuesday, February 11, at 7pm. Then it will meet regularly every second and fourth Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Rebel Bite at 649 E Broadway in Long Beach, Calif. Members and guests are encouraged to arrive early to grab a bite to eat. “Not only does Rebel Bite have an excellent meeting space, their food is both delicious and reasonably priced,” said Spence. Rebel Bite’s menu includes a variety of spicy fusion dishes from gourmet pizza to spare ribs to pasta to “sammiches.”
