CCEJ honors original Freedom Rider Dr. John Maguire at Interfaith breakfast

A crowd of over 700 is expected to welcome keynote speaker John D. Maguire, President Emeritus of Claremont University Consortium and Graduate University, at the 19th Annual Interfaith/Intercultural Breakfast on Wednesday, February 24, 7:30 a.m. at the Hyatt Regency Long Beach – Regency Ballroom.

Dr. John D. Maguire has been a lifelong participant in America’s struggle for racial and social justice. A colleague of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., he was an original Freedom Rider in May, 1961 and became a life director of the King Center in Atlanta, serving in its initial year (1968-69) as chair of the board.

Currently the Senior Fellow in the Institute for Democratic Renewal in Claremont, John Maguire is engaged fulltime in a range of antiracism, social justice and democratic community building projects and activities. Dr. Maguire’s distinguished academic career includes two Fulbright Fellowships, more than 50 articles and contributions to books, and awards from major social, civic, service and professional organizations.

Hosted by The California Conference for Equality and Justice (CCEJ), formerly known as The National Conference of Christians and Jews (NCCJ), the Annual Interfaith / Intercultural Breakfast incorporates the traditions of several religious and cultural groups that contribute to the ethnic and spiritual mosaic of the community. The event offers the opportunity for people of all racial, ethnic and religious backgrounds to come together to celebrate the rich diversity of the southern California area as well as share the vision of truly inclusive communities.

Benefactors Gene and Ann Lentzner began their perpetual gift seven years ago helping to underwrite all future CCEJ Interfaith/Intercultural Breakfasts, allowing CCEJ to keep ticket prices affordable.

Registration will begin at 6:45 a.m., with breakfast to follow at 7:30 a.m. at the Hyatt Regency Long Beach – Regency Ballroom. The cost is $38 per person, $380 for a Harmony Table, $500 for a Peace Table, $750 for a Celebration Table, and $1,200 for a Jubilee Table.
