On October 20 from 10am to 2pm, the Los Angeles Community Development Foundation (CDF) will host the Grand Opening of the Certified Growing Experience Farmers Market at 750 Via Carmelitos in North Long Beach.  The guest list will include residents, local officials, farmers and community organizations.

The California Freshworks Fund along with the Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Foundation awarded funds to the CDF to initiate a new farmers market at the iconic Growing Experience Urban Farm in North Long Beach community.

“The Growing Experience Urban Farm is the perfect location to begin the battle against obesity in North Long Beach,” said CDF Executive Director, Jennifer Blackwell-Trotter.  “Located at Carmelitos Public Housing where 85% of residents are extremely low income and 14% of residents in the surrounding 90805 zip code live below the poverty line.”

This strategic investment aims to combat an abnormally high childhood obesity rate in a community saturated with a high number of alcohol distributors and fast food restaurants.  According to the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC), in 2009 there were 93 pending and active alcohol license records within the 90805 ZIP Code (North Long Beach); a rate much higher than in neighboring Bixby Knolls, California Heights, and Virginia Country Club.  Furthermore, data from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health demonstrates that obesity is most prevalent in low-income communities and often leads to higher medical costs due to various chronic illnesses such as diabetes and hypertension.

The Growing Experience Farmers Market is only possible with the support of funders, Housing Authority of the County of Los Angeles, Councilmember Al Austin, and the University of California Cooperative Extension.

The CDF does not only want to bring healthy foods and good eating habits, they also want to enrich the community by bringing local farmers, residents, and community organizations together.  The CDF invites local farmers to come and sale their produce; local community organizations to share their resources and services; and local entertainers demonstrate their talents.

The Certified Growing Experience Farmers Market  launches October 20 with a Grand Opening celebration from 10am to 2pm at 750 Via Carmelitos, Long Beach, CA 90805. For more information on the Certified Growing Experience Farmers Market or to donate to the CDF please contact Jennifer Blackwell-Trotter, Executive Director, at (323) 838-7730 or Jennifer.Blackwell@lacdf.org.

The CDF is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization established in 1997. Their mission is to inspire Public Housing and Section 8 residents by providing positive life-changing opportunities. This Farmers Market is an additional program in the CDF’s repertoire that helps Public Housing and Section 8 residents.
