Alan Patalano will lead LBFD as new Fire Chief

lbfd fire chief alan patalano On Friday Long Beach City Manager Pat West made the announcement that Deputy Chief Alan Patalano will take over as the new Fire Chief for the Long Beach Fire Department.

“I’m privileged to be chosen for this position, and I look forward to improving the quality of life and safety of the Long Beach community,” Chief Patalano said. “My career with the Long Beach Fire Department has been highly rewarding and I look forward to stepping into this new role.”

Patalano has served as a Deputy Chief for the City of Long Beach for the past eight years and was most recently assigned as the manager of the Support Services Bureau. In this position, he directs the efforts of the Department’s Training Division, EMS Education and Quality Improvement Division, and the Fire Communications Center.

“With over 25 years in the fire service, and over 26 years as a licensed paramedic, Chief Patalano has the experience to lead the Long Beach Fire Department,” West said.  “He has a history serving the Long Beach community and will do a great job in leading our Fire Department.”

Chief Patalano has worked for the City of Long Beach for more than 20 years and during his tenure he has served as a Firefighter, Paramedic, Fire Captain, Training Captain, EMS Coordinator and Deputy Fire Chief.  He has also served as a firefighter with the City of Escondido and as a flight paramedic with the University of California, San Diego.

The new Fire Chief is already active on the Los Angeles Area Fire Chiefs Association Regional Training Group and is very involved in local and State EMS issues. He assisted in the development of the Los Angeles Regional Interoperable Communications System (LA-RICS) JPA, where he serves as the City’s representative on the Legislative Committee. Alan is a member of the LA/LB UASI Working Group, which develops projects and allocates homeland security grant funds to area agencies in support of regional domestic preparedness. In addition, he has served as a member of the City’s Embracing Diversity Committee.

Deputy Chiefs Alan Patalano, Jeff Reeb, and Mike Garcia have been managing the Long Beach Fire Department since Fire Chief Dave Ellis retired in 2009.
