The newest provider of live, theatrical entertainment performed by families for families presents its premier mainstage production – Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka at the California Heights United Methodist Church in Long Beach. The Children’s Theatre of Long Beach (CTLB) seeks to bring families together both on stage and in the audience for this whimsical and high-energy retelling of Dahl’s classic tale of greed, generosity and chocolate. Directed by Sean McMullen, it features a cast of performers of all ages who come from throughout the greater Long Beach and Orange County area. The show runs Thursday-Sunday, May 15-18.
In discussing the selection of Willy Wonka, McMullen said, “This show’s themes of truthfulness and perseverance combined with its delicious sense of humor made it a stand out for CTLB’s first production.” Audiences can expect lots of creativity, imagination and unusual staging from this “Wonka.”
Much of the exciting and spectacular storytelling elements of Willy Wonka will be handled through the use of shadow puppets and other surprising and not often used theatrical conventions. This will truly be a family-friendly Willy Wonka, with lots of song, dance and sparkle, but nothing too scary for younger audience members.
