EverythingLongBeach recently spoke with Dr. Karin Kim of Chiropractic Neurology Center, via email. They talked about inspirations, challenges and what’s it’s like being a chiropractor in Bixby Knolls.
How long have you been in business?
Approximately 9 years here at Long Beach. Dr. Kim was in practice in San Francisco for approximately a year before she moved down to Long Beach.
Describe Chiropractic Neurology Center:
Chiropractic Health care with a specialty in neurology. We have two doctors on staff, Dr. Shad Groves, DC, DACNB, QME and Dr. Karin Kim, DC who provide competent, conservative health care and education with a sense of humor and great compassion. We have two well-trained massage therapists providing relaxation and therapeutic massage Mon through Sat. Same day appointmens available usually. Also, we perform balance testing on the vestibular platform and we also provide Spinal Decompression therapy for those with disc degeneration and disc disease.
Why did you start Chiropractic Neurology Center?
We opened our doors here on Long Beach Blvd on October 2, 2000. Since then, we have taken care of over 4000 patients in the Long Beach, Orange County, Los Angeles area. Many of our patients are still with us over the years for regular, preventative maintenance care to maintain and promote better health.
Both Dr. Kim and Dr. Groves are inspired by the field of Chiropractic Neurology because of the overwhelming implication of a healthy brain and nervous system not just on th spine and the neuromuscular system, but also on the overall quality of life for any individual who seeks quality of life experiences.
What makes Chiropractic Neurology Center stand out?
Very clearly that it is our focus on Chiropractic Neurology. It is the application of the latest research and innovotions in the scientific field of Neurology in a conservative, non-invasive system of stimulaion and therapy that minimizes the need for drugs and sugery. Think of it this way, the spine does not stand alone. It’s main purpose is to protect the spinal cord. When the spine is subluxated, it’s the soft tissue structures – muscles and ligaments – that are not doing what it is supposed to be doing. Therefore, muscles move when the brain tells it to. When the brain is not responding the way it needs to, one’s spine would be subluxated.
What is the biggest success Chiropractic Neurology Center has had?
The biggest success is that our primary source of patients are from word-of-mouth referrals. It is the patients who have benefitted from our care enough to send the people they care about. It is truly the highest compliment to the doctors when our patient referrals consititute the single largest source of our new patients!
Also, after being in business for almost ten years, the very first patient we have ever take care of in this office still comes back to see us when he is in need – from Palm Desert, where he has moved to!
What is your favorite part of running a chiropractic office?
Seeing patients get better and that they are able to do more of what they love to do – from competitive runners who can run a split second faster to the father who now can play with his children after work because his back pain no longer bothers him.
What are the biggest challenges you face?
Good question, sometimes patients have other challenges and cannot follow through with care and become a success story – I always wonder what could have been for that individual…
What unique talents do you bring to Chiropractic Neurology Center?
Yes, Dr. Groves concurrently completed his post doctorate degree in Chiropractic Neurology at the same time he completed his Doctorate of Neurology. He is one of 368 Diplomate of American Chiropractic Neurology Board worldwide.
Dr. Kim has also completed her 3 year Chiropractic Neurology courses after her Doctorate of Chiropractic. She has not yet sat the Board exam because she has been busy raising her two little girls as well as maintaining her part-time practice. Dr. Kim is a naturalized citizen of the United States. Her first language is Chinese Mandarin.
How is Chiropractic Neurology Center involved with the community?
We are actively involved in the Chiropractic Neurlogy community which is worldwide and based in Cape Canaveral, FL.
Do you have any future plans for Chiropractic Neurology Center?
To continue to provide the best possible Chiropractic Neurology care for the general public.
What is the best advice that you received and who did it come from?
Take care of th people first~ all else will follow! Not sure where it came from, but it i the pervasive theme in our office!
One Last Thing:
Currently only approximately 11% of the population in the US that is under Chiropractic care. This means that almost 9 out of 10 people need care and have not sought out a Chiropractor. I think that Chiropractic care is like dentistry 100 yrs ago. With proper education, more people will understand how important it is for them to take care of their spine and their brain, and not wait for an acccident or pain to drive them into our office!
