It will be a White Christmas by the Bay in Rainbow Harbor
2009-12-01 · By Editor
This December, guests are invited to enjoy a flurry of holiday events downtown. Rainbow Harbor Holiday Events will feature a full month of things to do for the whole family including Christmas tree lighting, snow, and carolers with an ocean backdrop.
For a holiday event to remember, the Aquarium of the Pacific, Shoreline Village, and The Pike invite the public to come and enjoy the sights, sounds, and tastes of a white Christmas by the bay.
Many of the events — including the holiday harbor cruises and ice skating — take place daily and are already open. Be sure to mark your calendar for weekend celebrations such as the tree lighting and snow day.
The Rainbow Harbor Holidays Christmas Tree
The Rainbow Harbor Holidays Christmas Tree stands 30 feet tall and has more than 3,000 lights. It takes nearly 12 hours to install and decorate before the magical moment when the tree is lit for the first time. Councilwoman Suja Lowenthal officially lit the Christmas Tree and recognized the Menorah and Kwanzaa displays on the Sunday before Thanksgiving. The tree shines nightly at The Pike’s Event Park (corner of Shoreline Drive and Pine Avenue).
Sounds of Christmas: Holiday Carolers
Going for an evening stroll along the watefront? Don’t miss the carolers! The Pike’s Roaming Christmas Caroler will ring in the holiday along the waterfront with the songs that epitomize the season. Listen for holiday music Saturday evenings through December 18. The Carolers begin making the rounds at 5:00 p.m.
Snow Day in Shoreline Village
Frolic in 15 tons of snow on Saturday, December 11 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in Shoreline Village. There will be mountains of man-made snow for kids ages 12 and under to build a snowman and ride sleds on. They can also play in the two inflatable houses (fee applies). Snow Day in Shoreline Village will have free hot chocolate and coffee, holiday music, and a trackless train for all ages to enjoy.
Free Shark Lagoon Nights
The public is invited to get up close with the ocean’s ultimate predators at the Aquarium of the Pacific for FREE during Shark Lagoon Nights. Guests will have the opportunity to touch bamboo sharks and see large sharks such as sandtigers as well as rays in the Aquarium’s Shark Lagoon. Coffee, hot cocoa, beer, wine, desserts, and snacks are available for purchase.
Please note that while Shark Lagoon Nights is scheduled for almost every Friday, some Fridays are excluded. Check the dates on the Aquarium’s website for availability. Shark Lagoon Nights are weather-dependent and can be canceled due to inclement weather.
