tutoring, in-home tutors,EverythingLongBeach recently spoke with Amy Becker, Area Director of Club Z! In-Home Tutoring, via email. They talked about inspirations, challenges and what’s it’s like having a business in Mobile.

How long have you been in business? 7 years.

Describe Club Z!:

We offer, quality, one-on-one, in-home tutoring for students of all ages and in all subjects, in the comfort and safety of their home.  Our tutors are either credentialed teachers, or they have degrees in the subjects that they teach.

We work with the schools to help students to do better in their own classes and to gain confidence through the school’s curriculum.

Why did you start Club Z! In-Home Tutoring?

Both Area Directors, Amy and Shelly are credentialed teachers.  When they had their children, it was a no-brainer to start tutoring.  The business grew to include around 30 area teachers as a part of their Club Z! Team.

It was a way for them to still help students, be involved in education and to be able to work from home.

What makes Club Z! In-Home Tutoring stand out?

Our ability to match our students to the tutor is the main reason we stand out. We spend much of our time finding that perfect tutor with the perfect experience or personality to fit with a student.  If we don’t get it right the first time, we have no problem trying again to make that perfect match.

Another Stand Out service that we provide is working closely with schools and teachers.  This helps  our tutors to find out exactly what we can do to help the student to improve in class as well as to provide them with some basic concepts that they may have missed in the past.

What is the biggest success Club Z! In-Home Tutoring has had?

Our successes come back to us every week, one student at a time.  Whenever a tutor or a student reports that they improved on their score.  When parents tell us it is easier for their child to get through homework and they note their increased confidence in daily tasks.  Those are our biggest successes.

What is your favorite part of running a tutoring business?

My favorite part of running the business is the ability for us to stay in touch with what is going on in the district, schools and with students.  Having our own children in the schools, it helps us to have perspective as to how we can really help schools, especially in times of budget cuts, etc.  as is happening now.

What are the biggest challenges you face?

Our biggest challenge was transitioning from a teacher mentality to a business-owner mentality.  Learning the intricacies of what makes a successful business.  We have had to learn some things the hard way, but it has made us more successful in the long run.  We are still learning every day!

What unique talents do you bring to Club Z! In-Home Tutoring?

Amy has:

  • California Clear Credential – Multiple Subjects.
  • Masters Degree in Teaching Reading
  • Experience as a 5th grade Literacy teacher in Long Beach USD where she worked with students with special needs, and/or students who struggled through reading and math, learning ways to make it fun for them.
