Councilwoman Schipske doesn’t understand the facts…again.

In her blog yesterday she claims that the purpose of outsourcing street sweeping is so private contractors can contribute to political campaigns. Actually, I think it is just the opposite. Councilwoman Schipske has taken so much from the unions that she puts their interests before her constituents. After all, all I am asking for is an analysis to determine possible financial benefits. Gerrie is adamantly opposed to this and to having an open mind.

Nevertheless, this week I have an item on the Budget Oversight Committee meeting agenda to request an analysis to determine if it is possible to reduce our City’s street sweeping costs.

Click here to review the item.
Read the rest of Saving Taxpayer Money~Councilmember Gary DeLong

“This is a significant milestone for the restoration of the Los Cerritos Wetlands,” said Los Cerritos Wetlands Authority Chair and Long Beach Councilmember Gary DeLong. “We have put the pieces in place to start the planning for restoring this priceless natural resource.”

On Thursday, December 9, the Los Cerritos Wetlands Authority (LCWA), voted to accept the final installment of a $450,000 grant to fund the plan, which will allow the LCWA to develop a feasibility study with a comprehensive restoration plan and allow for the design of public trails connecting the communities of Southeast Long Beach and Seal Beach. The study will include the Bryant, Hellman and City of Long Beach properties, which are components of the larger Los Cerritos Wetlands complex These properties offer an extremely rare opportunity to restore coastal wetlands and create public access improvements. The LCWA will solicit competitive proposals shortly for this study, and work on the study may begin as early as Spring of 2010.
Read the rest of The Los Cerritos Wetlands Restoration Effort Takes A Significant Step Forward

SEISMIC SURVEY DEMONSTRATION

Please join Vice Mayor Lowenthal for a demonstration activity for residents interested in the seismic survey trucks that will be coming to our part of the city in the coming months.

As you may know, Signal Hill Petroleum has been conducting survey tests with four seismic testing trucks and police escorts traversing areas of Long Beach in an effort to provide a detailed three-dimensional map of the region, including its complex pattern of earthquake faults and deep geology. It could also locate deposits of a possible 2 billion barrels of oil. The mapping, similar to medical ultrasonic imaging, uses acoustic waves to penetrate the earth. Data will be shared with the cities and academia. To create those waves, specially designed vehicles, called vibro-seis trucks, pound the street with devices resembling oversized pneumatic hammers that send out tremors that shake the earth. The trucks typically move in increments of 80 feet and conduct 12 25-second shakes per site.
Read the rest of Seismic Survey Demonstration & Broadway Visioning Community Meeting – September 29

This solar trash can was installed in Belmont Shore as part of a six-month-long pilot project in various parts of the city.

“I have been looking forward to the installation of the solar trash bins here in Belmont Shore,” said 3rd District Councilmember Gary DeLong. ”I am pleased our City, the Belmont Shore Business Association, the Belmont Shore Parking and Business Improvement Area Advisory Commission and the distributor WAXIE have partnered to bring this technology to our City.”

These solar trash bins harness the power of the sun in an effort aimed at slashing waste, costs and greenhouse gases. The containers have the same blueprint as regular trash cans but can compact about 150 gallons of trash and compact the material into a 32-gallon bin, squeezing the trash into just 20 percent of its normal volume and operating entirely on solar energy. In addition, these bins come side by side with bottle, can and paper recycling units to increase recycling rates and boost conservation.
Read the rest of Long Beach’s Second Solar Trash Bin Debuts on Second Street

In a city where nearly half the population is registered to vote, 14.7% of registered voters chose the leaders. Long Beach election results streamed live over the city’s website throughout the night. Still marked as “unofficial,” these results are accurate as of 3:39 a.m.

Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster was the first to give an acceptance speech last night when it became clear that opponent Steve Merino would not get enough votes pose a challenge. The 21-year-old mayoral candidate was definitely a long shot, but managed to capture 16.2% of the ballots garnering 5,057 votes to Bob Foster’s 26,175.

The only election heading towards a run-off is the 7th District Council seat. With votes cast for 5 candidates—Jill Hill, Jack C. Smith, James Johnson and write-in candidates Fernando Bernabe and Tonia Reyes-Uranga—only two will move on the next round. Since no candidate was able to earn more than 50% of the votes, incumbent Tonia Reyes-Uranga will face off with James Johnson at a run-off election in June.

(The election results for Council Districts 1, 3, 5 and 9 are expressed as percentages.
