Councilwoman Rae Gabelich is hosting the 8th District Redistricting Community Meeting today, June 28, 2011 at The Expo Building.

The City Council, on a 5-4 vote, approved a motion to prepare a redistricting map that would move the Bixby Knolls neighborhood and the New Bixby neighborhood from the 8th Council District to the 7th Council District. This plan would also split the Bixby Knolls commercial corridor down the middle of Atlantic Avenue.

U.S. Congresswoman Linda Sanchez and City Councilmembers Rae Gabelich and Steven Neal led a groundbreaking celebration for the $2 million rehabilitation of a 1.5-mile section of Paramount Boulevard, between Candlewood Street and Artesia Boulevard.

Congresswoman Sanchez secured $400,000 in Federal Highway Administration Demonstration Funds, which were joined with funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and Proposition 42 gasoline sales tax revenue.

The former Roberts Department Store building, measuring more than 52,000 square feet, was finally demolished last October. The building had been sitting vacant for more than 13 years.

The new Marshalls Department Store has replaced it with a modern retail facility that is sure to draw people to the Bixby Knolls Shopping Center. The new structure is 42,490 square feet and includes five smaller shops. Planned renovations also include façade improvements along California Place south of 45th Street. The project design is consistent with North Long Beach Design Guidelines.

BKBIA staffer, Krista Leaders, sprays solvent to remove graffiti.

The Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association has recently partnered with the Department of Public Works to eliminate graffiti in the district. The BKBIA encourages all business owners and residents to call the city’s graffiti hotline to report any tags as soon as possible but wanted to take this to the next level.

Blair Cohn, executive director for the BKBIA, explains the organization’s plan of attack for fighting graffiti in the 8th District shopping and dining area.

“We started to notice that the smaller graffiti tags grew in numbers as the taggers would write on traffic signs, windows, and light poles. These are harder to see when you are driving down the corridors but are more noticeable on foot. The idea was to help speed up the process by asking Public Works for the materials that could remove the paint, chalk, or ink ourselves.”

Councilwoman Rae Gabelich is hosting a Shred Fest, on Saturday, April 24 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.  The event will take place at Scherer Park in front of the North Division Police Substation at the corner of Atlantic Avenue and Del Amo Blvd.

Long Beach residents and business owners will have the opportunity to properly dispose of old financial documents and personal records such as credit card and bank statements, pre-approved credit card applications and receipts.  Identity theft is the fastest growing crime in the United States.  It affects 9 million victims per year, with annual losses that exceed 50 billion dollars.
