Councilmember Rae Gabelich to Speak at NLB CAG Sept. Meeting

On Sunday September 12, 2010, The North Long Beach Community Action Group (NLB CAG) will be hosting its monthly community meeting at the NLB Police Substation. 8th District Councilmember Rae Gabelich is the scheduled speaker for the event.

This is an open meeting and the public is welcome. There will be opportunity drawings and information regarding community activities, the city of Long Beach and redevelopment.

The September North Long Beach Community Action Group Monthly meeting will take place on Sunday, September 12, 2010 from 2:00pm – 4:00pm at the NLB Police Substation 4891 Atlantic Avenue (SW corner at Del Amo), Long Beach, 90807.

Councilman Dee Andrews and City of Long Beach Human Dignity Program Offers A Taste Of World Cultures

In celebration of Cultural Diversity Month, 6th District Councilman Dee Andrews and the City of Long Beach Human Dignity Program are hosting a Cultural Diversity Festival on Saturday, October 9, 2010 at the John and Alice Wallace/Petrolane Boys & Girls Club at Martin Luther King Jr. Park.

The festival theme this year will be A Taste of World Cultures. It will include a main stage featuring cultural performances and speakers along with free samplings of various food selections from around the world. There will be information tables of community groups, arts and crafts for the children along with a continuous drum circle in the park. People are encouraged to bring their percussion or stringed instruments and join in.

Shaila Durcal Named Celebrity Marshal for 2nd Annual Latin American Parade and Festival

The office of Council Member Robert Garcia and the Downtown Long Beach Associates (DLBA) announced today the names of the four individuals who will be honored at the 2nd Annual Latin American Parade & Festival on Saturday, September 25th.

Well-known Spanish singer, Shaila Durcal, will be honored as the event’s Celebrity Marshal. Port of Long Beach Harbor Commissioner, Mario Cordero, will serve as Parade Grand Marshal. The event will also honor two individuals as Community Marshals: Centro CHA Executive Director, Jessica Quintana and City of Long Beach Bicycle Ambassador, Tony Cruz.

Public Invited to Meet New LBPD South Division Commander Sept. 1

Residents are invited to the meet Joe Stilinovich, newly appointed Commander of the Long Beach Police Department’s South Division, on Wednesday, September 1, from 6:00 to 7:30 pm at the Willmore Community Police Center, 910 Daisy Ave.

Commander Joe Stilinovich will give an overview of the division and area. Attendees will get to know and exchange information with the South Division Command Staff and Officers, and learn how to work together for a better neighborhood.

This free workshop is Wednesday, September 1, from 6:00 to 7:30 pm at the Willmore Community Police Center, 910 Daisy Ave Long Beach, 90813. The workshop will be presented in English with Spanish translation available.

Councilmember Garcia Announces Inaugural “State of the First District & Community Awards Ceremony”

City Councilmember Robert Garcia will present his first State of the First District report on Monday August 23 at 6pm in the Renaissance High School Auditorium, 238 East 8th Street. The event is open to the public on a first come first serve basis.

The State of the First District will consist of an overview of the many projects and achievements Garcia has worked on during his first year in office. The event will also include awards to community members who have shown an outstanding commitment to civic service and community improvement in the First District.

Save the Long Beach Municipal Band; city continues search for funds

Noted composer Herbert L. Clarke surrounded by the Long Beach Municipal Band Majorettes. The Long Beach Municipal Band is an historical treasure that has been playing music for more than 100 years.

5th District Councilmember Gerrie Schipske has posted several articles on her blog to help residents understand the budget breakdown for the summer concerts and the Long Beach Municipal Band.

Each summer the City spends $432,000 or $16,000 each concert for this 101 year tradition. A detailed memo prepared by City Manager Pat West outlines the costs involved.

Mayor Bob Foster stated at Tuesday’s Council Meeting that he is committed to finding a solution to the funding of the Long Beach Municipal Band.

One solution to maintain the funding of the Long Beach Municipal Band is for the City to find corporate sponsors.

Councilman Dee Andrews To Host 6th District Budget Summit

The City of Long Beach and 6th District Councilman Dee Andrews are pleased to present the 6th District Budget Summit, Tuesday, August 31st, at Ernest S. McBride, Sr. Park.

Join Councilman Dee Andrews, Assistant City Manger Suzanne Frick, the Director of Financial Management Lori Ann Farrell, and your neighbors to discuss the 2011 City of Long Beach Budget.

Officials are projecting an $18.5 million general fund deficit in the next fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1, leaving a total general fund of $382 million. The general fund pays for core services such as police, firefighters, libraries, parks and recreation, and sidewalk and street repair. “I encourage residents to attend this meeting to voice their concerns, to listen and to be informed”, said Councilman Andrews. “This is your city, your money, and when it comes to the budget, I want to make sure that your voices are heard”, continued Andrews.

Councilmember Garcia to Cut Ribbon at Kress Market Grand Opening

City Councilmember Robert Garcia will preside over the Grand Opening Ceremony for the new Kress Market at Fifth and Pine, Thursday, August 12. The Kress Market, owned by Javier Ortiz, is the newest of many businesses opening on North Pine in what many see as a renaissance for downtown.

The public, local media, and government dignitaries are invited to attend the ceremony, which will include samples of Kress’ culinary offerings.

“I think I speak for the entire downtown community when I say I am very excited about the Kress Market opening,” said Garcia. “Not only will Kress bring quality, healthful food to our community, it’s also part of a revitalization happening downtown that we can all be proud of.”

Long Beach Solar Tour shines light on local sustainability efforts

Ed Begley, Jr., Author of "Living Like Ed: A Guide to the Eco-Friendly Life", supports the National Solar Tour.

The 5th District Solar and Sustainability Taskforce announced that the 2010 Long Beach Solar Tour is returning on Saturday, October 2 to educate the community about the benefits of solar technology. The annual solar tour is also an opportunity to learn about many of the sustainability efforts that are taking place in Long Beach.

The Long Beach Solar Tour is part of the American Solar Energy Society’s National Solar Tour, the world’s largest grassroots solar event. This solar tour offers the opportunity to tour innovative green homes and buildings to see how using solar energy, energy efficiency, and other sustainable technologies can reduce monthly utility bills and tackle climate change.

More than 160,000 participants will visit some 5,500 buildings in 3,200 communities across the U.S. The 2010 Long Beach Solar Tour will feature homes and businesses that have implemented solar and sustainability technology.

Marshalls Store Grand Opening In Bixby Knolls Thursday, August 5

On Thursday, August 5, the Long Beach Redevelopment Agency (RDA), along with Councilmember Rae Gabelich, 8th District, will celebrate the grand opening of a new Marshalls Department Store in Bixby Knolls at 4450 Atlantic Ave. The grand opening celebration will begin at 10:00 am with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

The former Roberts Department Store building, measuring more than 52,000 square feet, was finally demolished last October. The building had been sitting vacant for more than 13 years.

The new Marshalls Department Store has replaced it with a modern retail facility that is sure to draw people to the Bixby Knolls Shopping Center. The new structure is 42,490 square feet and includes five smaller shops. Planned renovations also include façade improvements along California Place south of 45th Street. The project design is consistent with North Long Beach Design Guidelines.

Long Beach’s Second Solar Trash Bin Debuts on Second Street

On Wednesday, July 28, the City of Long Beach debuted the City’s second solar trash can. This solar trash can was installed in Belmont Shore as part of a six-month-long pilot project in various parts of the city.

“I have been looking forward to the installation of the solar trash bins here in Belmont Shore,” said 3rd District Councilmember Gary DeLong. ”I am pleased our City, the Belmont Shore Business Association, the Belmont Shore Parking and Business Improvement Area Advisory Commission and the distributor WAXIE have partnered to bring this technology to our City.”

These solar trash bins harness the power of the sun in an effort aimed at slashing waste, costs and greenhouse gases. The containers have the same blueprint as regular trash cans but can compact about 150 gallons of trash and compact the material into a 32-gallon bin, squeezing the trash into just 20 percent of its normal volume and operating entirely on solar energy. In addition, these bins come side by side with bottle, can and paper recycling units to increase recycling rates and boost conservation.

Kids Fishing Rodeo to Offer Fun and Prizes

The 57th Annual Kids Fishing Rodeo will be held Friday, July 30 at Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier. The Rodeo, a 2010 Long Beach Sea Festival event, is open to kids 16 and under. Kids 12 and under must be supervised by an adult, and each participant must bring their own rod and reel.

The event, free to the public, includes bait, snacks, fishing instruction and prizes in many various fishing categories, as well as a raffle. Pre-registration forms can be found on the Alfredo’s Beach Club website.
