Councilmember Al Austin II and the Eighth District Senior Advisory Committee (SAC) invite local seniors to the kick-off for a new program of activities geared toward adults 55 and older at the Expo Arts Center.
The free event takes place on Thursday, October 15 between 10 a.m. and 12 noon at the Expo Arts Center, located at 4321 Atlantic Ave.
It will provide an introduction to the free programming for seniors that will commence on October 20 and take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Expo between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
“When I took office three years ago, I noticed that there was a void in senior programming in the community,” said Councilmember Austin. “We brought seniors together through our Eighth District Senior Advisory Committee and these programs are the result of their hard work.”
“SAC members are very excited about this new programming for seniors,” said committee member Barbara Shoag. “We have a lot of seniors in the community who don’t have a place to go during the day, so the committee has put together this program as a starting point. We are hoping to get feedback from participants and adjust the program to fit the community’s needs as we go along.”
At the kick-off event, seniors will learn about the classes and programs that will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Expo, as well as provide input on other activities they would like to see in the future. There will be lunch, refreshments and prizes. Walgreens will also provide free flu shots at the event, while supplies last.
Beginning on Tuesday, October 20, there will be senior-focused activities at the Expo beginning at 10 a.m. The structure of the programming will be as follows:
§ 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.: exercise class (yoga, tai chi, dance, etc.)
§ 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.: guest speaker (Tuesdays) and knitting/arts and crafts (Thursdays)
§ 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.: lunch
§ 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.: music and games (bingo, cards, etc.)
