Long Beach City Councilmember and California Assembly District 64 candidate Steve Neal announced today that he has secured the endorsements of three prominent Los Angeles area labor unions: the United Domestic Workers of America (AFSCME-UDW) Local 3930; UNITE HERE Local 11; and the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 324.
“I am honored and proud to have the support of the workers from AFSCME-UDW Local 3930, UNITE HERE Local 11, and UFCW Local 324,” said Neal. “These organizations represent a wide range of domestic workers, hotel and restaurant workers, grocery store workers, and others who serve us day in and day out. It is humbling to know that these organizations believe that I can best represent the needs and concerns of Assembly District 64 working families in Sacramento. As a longtime member and leader in the labor community, I am grateful for their support.”
Steve Neal has been a community and labor leader in the Los Angeles area for decades. He won his first election as shop steward in the Retail Clerks Union Local 324, worked his way up the ranks as a member of CWA Local 9586 to become Executive Vice President, and served in the LA County Federation of Labor under Miguel Contreras, where he developed critical programs to serve working men and women, built coalitions with non-profits, religious groups, and community based organizations, and developed stronger relationships between labor unions and their communities. He also served as Executive Director of Labor Community Services Food and Emergency Program, a non-profit servicing more than a half million individuals annually.
Since his election in 2010, Steve, a Compton native, has served North Long Beach on the Long Beach City Council where he has an accomplished record supporting neighborhoods, small businesses, and working families as the author and creator of the Long Beach Foreclosure Registry Program, the Long Beach Liquor Store Modernization Program, and the North Long Beach Business Alliance. Councilmember Neal is the Assistant Pastor of S.E.A.M. Faith Family Church. He and his wife Katonja live in Long Beach and are the parents of five daughters, one son, and have nine grandchildren.
