Councilwoman Mungo Joins Other Elected Officials to Participate in Long Beach Dragon Boat Festival

District 5 Councilwoman Stacy Mungo

Long Beach Councilwoman Stacy Mungo will join other area elected officials in a special race at the Long Beach Dragon Boat Festival Saturday, July 18, 2015. The race will support Blind Start of America, an award-winning non-profit organization that provides scholarships for blind and visually impaired persons to develop job skills and live independently.

In addition to Councilwoman Mungo, the Blind Start VIP boat will include Lakewood Mayor Jeff Wood; Cerritos Mayor Carol Chen; Former Cerritos Mayor Bruce Barrows; Artesia Mayor Miguel Canales; Artesia Councilmember Sally Flowers; Paramount Councilmember Diane J. Martinez; Cerritos Councilmember Naresh Solanki; South Gate Mayor Jorge Morales; Bell Mayor Ali Saleh; and Santa Ana Councilmember Michele Martinez.

The Special VIP Race at Long Beach Dragon Boat Festival is Saturday, July 18, 2015 at Marine Stadium, 5255 Paoli Way, Long Beach, CA 90803. Opening ceremony begins at 10:00 a.m.; VIP race at 11:15 a.m.

Blind Start was founded in 2006 by Brian Tom, a visually impaired entrepreneur. Always competitive, he and a growing team of supporters organized a number of athletic events, beginning with a blind/blindfolded mud run in 2009. The next year, Blind Start became the first blind dragon boat racing team at the Long Beach Dragon Boat Festival. Blind Start continues to organize events promoting participation in mainstream activities for blind and visually impaired individuals.
