roberts-demolition-partyUptown locals have been waiting to find out the future of the Roberts Department Store building in the Bixby Knolls Shopping Center for 15 years — ever since the store closed.

Sitting vacant after serving neighborhood shoppers for 28 years, over time the Atlantic Avenue building became rundown, and a sore subject for residents that wondered if another business would ever take the space.

“Now the neighborhood gets its wish,” announced BKBIA Executive Director Blair Cohn in an email this week.

The demolition of the Roberts store begins Thursday to make room a Marshalls Department Store. Bixby residents are ready to celebrate.

The Office of 8th District Councilmember Rae Gabelich, the Long Beach Redevelopment Agency and the Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association invite residents to cheer on the demolition Thursday, October 15 at 10 a.m. at 4450 Atlantic Avenue, Long Beach.

Light refreshments will be provided. Bring a chair, bring a friend and be ready to cheer.

The party continues Thursday night at Nino’s Italian Restaurant, 3853 Atlantic, for the Community Happy Hour, 5:30pm – 7:00pm.
