The Aquarium of the Pacific’s summer-long celebration of the urban ocean continues, as events and programs take visitors on a journey to explore the local coast and learn more about the future of Southern California’s urban ocean.
On July 12 Aquarium President and CEO Jerry Schubel will present an evening lecture, Unlocking the Potential of the Southern California Urban Ocean. He will discuss what issues the ocean will face over coming decades, how increasing human populations along the coast will change the urban ocean, and what steps need to be taken to lead to healthy and productive coastal and ocean ecosystems, diverse and abundant marine life, and new and expanded ocean industries that stimulate local and regional economies. Get an up-close look at the urban ocean by reserving a spot on one of the Aquarium’s cruises touring the local port complex. The Urban Ocean: World Port and Sealife Cruise, scheduled for four dates this summer, explores one of the most high-trafficked segments of Southern California’s coast. Passengers will have the opportunity to see parts of the port complex not usually seen by the public, as well as the marine life and seabirds that make their homes in the area. An Aquarium educator, together with one of Harbor Breeze Cruises experienced boat captains, will narrate the tour, pointing out natural and man-made features of the port complex and how wildlife and humans interact.
