2009-06-06 · By Editor
Families with young children are invited to a free Family Fun Ride where they can learn bike safety, enter a drawing for a new bike and enjoy pedaling around a scenic waterfront park. The festivities are Sunday, June 7, from 11 am to 2 pm at Shoreline Aquatic Park near Pierpoint Landing, between the Aquarium of the Pacific and the Lions Lighthouse for the Blind.
The Family Fun Ride is sponsored by Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe, Councilmember Suja Lowenthal, City of Long Beach, Port of Long Beach, Long Beach Firefighters, and the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition. The event is being held in partnership with the 9th Annual Los Angeles River Ride, which earlier on Sunday travels from Griffith Park in Los Angeles to Shoreline Aquatic Park in Long Beach, and back.
“In this our first annual Family Fun Ride, we hope to bring families from throughout the community together to celebrate the benefits of riding a bike,” said Councilmember Suja Lowenthal. “Long Beach is determined to become the most bicycle-friendly metro city in the nation.”
Free hot dogs will be provided, and more than 100 helmets will be given away, along with several bikes, although all participants should bring their bike.
A bike rodeo and safety fair begins at 11:00 am, and the bike ride begins at approximately 12:30 pm. For more information, call 562.570.6334.
