bernie-pearlTired of market-tested commercial radio? Refresh your musical soul this summer with the Bernie Pearl Blues Band at Rancho Los Cerritos Historic Site on Thursday, July 30. The band provides country wisdom, virtuosity, a warm voice, and the kind of fingerpicking and slide guitar work that will knock your socks off. This free outdoor concert begins at 6 p.m. and lasts until 7:30 p.m. In this time of economic uncertainty, this is a low cost way to gather with friends and family and enjoy a night out in the splendor of the Rancho’s historic gardens!

The blues is “life itself” to Bernie Pearl. In fact, he says, “The blues is about feeling, and everything we’ve done is to bring that feeling to the listener.”

He is no traditionalist, and is a guitarist with an upbeat style. Bernie raises the roof with dazzling guitar solos – acoustic and electric – with his band. He learned from bluesmasters Sam ‘Lightnin’ Hopkins, Mance Lipscomb, Mississippi Fred MacDowell, and others and he and his band have backed the likes of B.B. King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Willie Dixon, and Big Joe Turner. In fact, the band has been a popular draw to different venues around Southern California and the world such as the House of Blues, Disney’s California Adventure, and the Playboy Pasadena Community Jazz Festival. His melodic interpretations are new and personal each time.

“I’m not a retro player,” he says, “I’m playing real blues for right now. I’m lucky.”

Donations are welcome, and go to support educational programs at the museum. Gates to the grounds will open at 5:00 p.m. for picnicking, and the adobe home will be open for self-guided tours throughout the evening. For your own comfort, we encourage you to bring a lawn chair or blanket.

Concerts are partially underwritten with a grant from the Arts Council for Long Beach. Rancho Los Cerritos Historic Site, in conjunction with Friends of Rancho Los Cerritos, has been presenting free neighborhood concerts as part of the museum’s dedication to fulfill its commitment to the community. The site’s educational programs and community events provide inspiration and joy for people of all ages. Rancho Los Cerritos is located on 4600 N. Virginia Road, Long Beach, 90807.
