First Annual Zydeco Mass and Dance on Fat Tuesday
2011-02-21 · By Editor
St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 7th and Atlantic Streets, Long Beach will celebrate Mardi Gras with its First Annual Zydeco Mass and Dance on Fat Tuesday, March 8th. These events are open to all and the Zydeco Mass (7pm) is Free.
Tickets to the Mardi Gras Celebration (held in Belliss Hall directly after the mass, 8pm) are $15 per person — children under 12 are free. Price of admission includes dinner and music provided by The Fontenot Pappion Old Style Creole Band, also heard during the Zydeco Mass.
The band was recently seen and heard at the O.C. Big Squeeze Festival. A highpoint in their musical career was having been featured at the NSU Creole Heritage Center, Natchitoches, LA. The Fontenot Pappion Old Style Creole Band is equally comfortable in all three Southwest Louisiana-grown musical genres — Cajun, Creole and Zydeco… Yes, there is a difference! However, the emphasis on this Fat Tuesday will be on Zydeco — a favorite of SoCal dancers.
Dinner will include such good-for-the-soul foods as Jambalaya, Red Beans & Rice and more… oh… and, of course, King Cake! Be sure to have a bowl of Fontenot Pappion Old Style Creole Gumbo while it lasts — it’s sure to go fast!
The wearing of Mardi Gras colors (purple, gold and green), beads and masking (N’awlins talk for costumes) is encouraged. Be sure to bring your dancing shoes. How else you gonna get them beads swingin’ proper?! Laissez les bon temps rouler! Parking is available on the Church property on a first come basis; street parking is also available.
