Kristen Gulmatico and Andrew Antunez hold their newborn baby Colton, born Jan. 1, 2010 at 12:05 a.m.

After 26 hours of labor, Colton Jaminson Antunez was delivered at the MemorialCare Center for Women at Miller Children’s Hospital and Long Beach Memorial at 12:05 a.m. Jan. 1, making him Long Beach’s first baby of 2010.

Colton was born to parents Kristen Gulmatico, 21, a Cypress College student, and Andrew Antunez, 22, a mechanic and Long Beach City College student.

Baby Colton came into the world at 21 inches long and 6 pounds, 13 ½ ounces, with “eyes wide open” and ready to take on the world, said his father.

Antunez and Gulmatico find the birth of their baby boy a good omen. The couple’s family and friends had a bet going about when the baby would be born with a prize of $85. Gulmatico won because she said they knew the baby would be born at midnight on New Years Day.

Antunez and Gulmatico had a tough year in 2009 economically, but say their son has given them hope for a better 2010. The young parents have many plans for the future – Antunez wants to finish school and become a mechanical engineer while Gulmatico hopes to finish school to become a lawyer.
