First Fridays Hosts 3rd Annual “Long Beach County Fair”
2016-03-18 · By Editor
Bixby Knolls and Long Beach Fresh are bringing the “Long Beach County Fair” to First Fridays this April. It’s a Long Beach twist on traditional county fairs, celebrating urban agriculture, food access, and handmade food producers.
Showcase of Local Food
The Long Beach County Fair is a free showcase of local food producers and organizations from all over Long Beach and the region. At EXPO, enjoy educational displays and demonstrations while you interact with Long Beach’s “Seeders,” “Feeders” and “Eaters.”
“Seeders,” our local growing community, will be there including representatives from the Harbor Area Farmers’ Market, a non-profit that manages 5 farmers’ markets in Long Beach, and Little Owl Preschool, showcasing its bi-weekly farmer’s market for parents and students. We’re also inviting local growers to showcase their Long Beach-grown fruits and vegetables (see competition details below).
“Feeders,” our chef community, like one of the longest-running sustainable food torch-bearers Chef Paul Buchanan of Primal Alchemy Catering, to newer arrivals like The Pie Bar who use local and organic ingredients in their award-winning desserts, as well as artisanal food businesses like Proper’s Pickles, Long Beach Creamery and Black Ring Coffee. They are adding to the fantastic variety of Bixby Knolls restaurants running up and down Atlantic.
“Eaters,” those passionate about making eating healthy food accessible to all, will be there to educate and catalyze. OC Food Access Coalition, Food Finders, local school good food advocates the Hughes Green Team, and North Long Beach-based healthy food advocates SugarWatch will have great information and ideas to share.
The EXPO Arts Center (4321 Atlantic Ave.) will host an artist showcase from the CSULB art department, FA4 Collective, Squeeze Art Collective, and many more local artists. First Fridays and farmy fun continues all over Bixby Knolls including Farmers-on-Stilts, visiting celebrity pig, Baby Banks at Pixie Toys, children’s games, pie-eating contest at Edward Jones, Farm Aid Tribute by MOVE, the Bixby Beekeepers, Leaf and Fin Aquaponics, miniature horses, and more!
Produced by Long Beach Fresh and the Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association, the Long Beach County Fair occurs in conjunction with Bixby Knolls First Fridays each April.
LB-Grown Agriculture Competition
Long Beach gardeners and growers are invited to compete for blue ribbon honors. Seasonal fruits and veggies grown in Long Beach’s yards, patios and community gardens can win ribbon awards and one coveted “Best in Show.” Find entry details at www.LBFresh.org.
Long Beach urban farmers and chefs including Joe Corso from Long Beach Organic, Agustin Romo, chef of Eqeko, and Dana Roberson, owner of Restauration, will award ribbons.
